With the World Cup only hours away from starting. What effect will it have on the people and tourism for the future? Who will be the lossers or winners in the end?
I have found this great BBC "have your say" discussion on the subject.
BBC News - How important is the World Cup for Africa?
A Few Comments from "have your say" discussion
Comment: The tickets are far too expensive which has caused unrest already.
Comment: As for ordinary South Africans, I imagine they'll feel a great sense of patriotism, and the country will no doubt benefit from increased tourism, but the long-term benefits remain to be seen.
Comment: The World Cup will benefit Africa on the tourism sector as its blessed with lots of natural resources.Africa will also be able to silence critics who think we can not prepare any thing that is world class.
Comment: Far greater benefits could have been gained by spending these vast sums on improving and expanding high quality tourism to bring in more visitors for the long term, and by doing something about the crime and poverty that currently blights this beautiful country and keeps tourists away. But instead the leaders chose to waste scarce resources on this white elephant.
